According to the breakdown of the exam, provided by ETS/College Board, the multiple choice section is worth 50 points, and the free response is the other 50. In the table below, I put down the 'estimated points' based on the sample outcome that you sent me.
The estimated points your students earn for the Multiple Choice section is 44/50; and for the free response 41/50; therefore the total points is 85.
It is then up to the Chief Reader and CollegeBoard/ETS to determine how the points are converted to the 5-point scale used by CollegeBoard/ETS. I think the conversion may depend on the benchmark and means each year as they may be different from year to year. In 2009, an 85 will likely be awarded a 5 for the AP exam grade.
